An important thing to know is that North Carolina is contributory negligence state. This means that if you are injured but also partially at fault for the accident you cannot get compensation.

If You Are Not at Fault

However, if someone else is totally responsible for an auto accident, you can collect. If, for example, you have permanent, serious injuries, you can get compensation for medical bills, scarring, and a lifetime of future treatment costs and lost wages.

In these cases, the Financial Responsibility Act (NC Statutes, Chapter 20) sets the policy limits for recovery for bodily injury at $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident. The limit for recovery for property damage is $25,000 in one accident.
